About Dwell Counseling & Heather Overstreet
While I was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, I have spent most of the past 20+ years living and working outside of the United States, including in South Korea, Thailand, Myanmar, and now Nicaragua. I am married to an Adult Third Culture Kid (ATCK), and together we have raised our four TCK children abroad. Because of these experiences, I understand both the beauty and the challenges of navigating life, identity, and belonging outside of one's passport country.
One of the most difficult seasons of my life came shortly after moving from Thailand to Myanmar. During a time when I felt overwhelmed, sad, and hopeless, counseling became a lifeline. Having someone walk alongside me with compassion and understanding profoundly impacted my life and planted in me a desire to offer that same support to others who may find themselves struggling, feeling alone, or searching for hope.
After many years of working alongside young professionals and families in Myanmar, I witnessed firsthand the challenges, stresses, and loss they experienced. With a desire to bring hope and healing to people who may have limited access to support, I decided to pursue a Master's degree in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling. I later spent four years working as a high school counselor at an international school in Bangkok, Thailand, where I had the beautiful opportunity to walk alongside adolescents as they navigated both the everyday challenges of growing up and the unique complexities of international life.
My training in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling shapes the way I view people and their struggles. Rather than seeing problems in isolation, I believe our experiences are deeply influenced by our relationships, families, cultures, and communities. This perspective is especially valuable when working with individuals and families navigating life across cultures, where questions of identity, belonging, and connection often intersect.
I genuinely love working with adolescents and adults who are exploring questions of identity, purpose, place, and belonging. Whether someone is facing anxiety, depression, grief, loss, transition, or simply feeling stuck, I consider it a privilege to sit with them in their struggles and help them move toward healing, growth, and hope.
Outside of counseling, I love being with my family, running and exploring new places, cultures, and people. Being in nature, whether the mountains or the beach, is when I feel closest to God, my very center and steadfast anchor as I have navigated all of the changes and challenges that life has brought.
